A fine day in Newquay

Updated: Sep 28, 2020

Make the most of a family day out in Newquay with our suggested itinerary…

Newquay is one of the UK’s favourite seaside destinations, and for good reason. As well as the obvious allure of the ocean and the possibilities that go with it – be that swimming, surfing, or simply sipping sundowners and admiring it – this ocean town is home to a world of attractions for all weathers, a plethora of tempting restaurants drawing on the region’s famed foodie produce, and a relaxed vibe, the likes of which you’ll only find so close to the water. While you could spend years holidaying here and still not experience it all, here at the Quies, we’re determined to make your stay with us as unforgettable as possible. With our hotel as your base, here is our itinerary for the perfect day out in Newquay. You could easily swap out activities and locations for any number of others in the area, but these are some of our favourites. We hope you love them too!

First thing’s first – start the day right. We’ve got something of a reputation for our breakfasts, in fact one guest on Tripadvisor explains that “I have never seen such a vast range of breakfast offerings in my life”, and another writes “you certainly didn’t leave here hungry”! Again, our goal is to make sure your time here is as memorable as possible, and that includes a good feed every morning!

Once you’ve scraped your plates clean and drained your teas, coffees and juices, it’s time to start the Newquay Treasure Trail. Available online at treasuretrails.co.uk/things-to-do/cornwall/newquay, for just £9.99 you can order a copy of the Newquay Murder Mystery Trail – perfect for kids and adults alike who are hoping to discover the town around them in an exciting and engaging way. Completed in your own time and at your own pace, the trail is approximately two miles long and takes around two hours to complete, and it’s the perfect way to start your day’s adventure. There’s also the chance to win some real treasure, as all correct answers are entered into the monthly £100 prize draw!

Once you’ve completed the trail (and submitted your answers!), it’s time for lunch. At this point, we should say that we highly recommend bringing along a picnic basket, as you’re sure to fill it with a visit to Trevilley Farm Shop (trevilleyfarm.com), or the Cornish Deli Store (cornishdelistore.com). Both shops have a superb offering of Cornish food and drink, perfect for packing a lunch hamper. With your picnic packed and ready, it’s time to head to Towan Headland. This is the perfect place to lay out a blanket and enjoy a spot of lunch, with unparalleled views of the Atlantic ocean. The views here are simply staggering, but the best part is, it’s only a short ten-minute scoot from town, meaning your next stop won’t feel a million miles away after your afternoon meal.

Next up is a round at Trenance Crazy Golf. After all, it wouldn’t be a family holiday without a bit of friendly competition! Fully open with Covid-19 safe operating procedures and set in beautifully landscaped gardens within the Trenance Leisure Park, the renowned 18 hole crazy golf course here is the perfect way to gently walk off lunch.

Once the scores are tallied up and the winner has finished gloating, it’s time to make your way to Lusty Glaze beach, where you’ll spend the rest of the afternoon. The sheltered beach here is perfect for swimming – ideal for cooling off after a day spent in the sun – and kids will love building sandcastles and digging holes whilst the grown-ups indulge in a spot of sunbathing. That is, if they too aren’t busy digging holes.

Lusty Glaze is also home to its own Adventure Centre, which offers a wealth of activities for those feeling adventurous. These include jet skiing, banana boats, surf lessons, dodgeball, volleyball and more. You can also take on the Terror Tight Rope course, or why not have a go at abseiling?

As the afternoon draws to a close, you have a choice: you can either indulge in the delectable menus on offer at the Lusty Glaze beach restaurant, or take your pick from the host of other eateries on offer in and around the town. Struggling to decide? Then be sure to check out our recommended restaurants blog post…
